Tel Aviv – The renowned Israeli political scientist, Middle East expert, and prominent government critic Dr. Ori Goldberg has passed away at the age of 50 after a severe battle with cancer.
This was confirmed by his eldest daughter, Avigail. In international journalism and academic circles, Goldberg was regarded as one of the most prominent Jewish-Israeli voices opposing the official military and geopolitical strategies of Tel Aviv. His death has triggered deep condolences among analysts, human rights activists, and journalists worldwide.
Academic Background and Military Consulting
Goldberg possessed a profound understanding of the Israeli security apparatus, which he would later criticize so fiercely. He earned his doctorate from Tel Aviv University, focusing on the history and ideology of the Shiite revolutionary movement in Iran. Later, he served as a Fox International Fellow at the prestigious Yale University and taught as a professor at academic institutions including Reichman University and the Israeli National Defense College. His expertise was highly sought after, leading him to serve in the past as a national security advisor and senior research fellow at the IDF’s Dado Center.
A Courageous Voice Within Israeli Civil Society
Rather than representing the official state line, Goldberg transformed into one of the sharpest critics from within Israeli civil society. He published as a freelance commentator and author for international media outlets such as Al Jazeera, New Lines Magazine, The Nation, and South Africa’s Daily Maverick.
His essays for the left-leaning, Tel Aviv-based +972 Magazine—which is operated jointly by Israeli and Palestinian journalists—gained particular recognition. Goldberg also leaves behind an important academic legacy, including his books Faith and Politics in Iran, Israel and the Islamic State and Understanding Shi’i Leadership.
Critique of the Gaza War and Regional Escalation
In his analyses, Goldberg tirelessly warned against a perpetual war and denounced what he described as the moral decay of Israeli society. Particularly since the outbreak of the Gaza war, he criticized the dehumanization of the Palestinian population and accused the Israeli leadership of deliberately fueling the escalatory spiral with Iran and in Lebanon for domestic political gains.
Through his unique Jewish-Israeli perspective, he remained until the very end an irreplaceable and courageous voice for moderation, international law, and empathy in the Middle East.
Hello, this is Avigail, Ori’s eldest daughter. I’m sorry to tell you that my dad passed away tonight, after a long battle with colon cancer. He was 50 years old.
